Marathon 2011
Hoplologia's most ambitious project yet!
2011 will mark the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, possibly the most pivotal military event of the ancient world.
Hoplologia intends to create a reenactment unit, the Taxeis Plataia (the "Group of Plataians") to go to Marathon, Greece in August, 2011 and help recreate the battle, and indeed the entire world of late Archaic Greece.
We hope to march from Plataia to Marathon, camp, and recreate the life of the citizen-hoplite--and his family! Ideally, we hope to have between thirty and sixty members in kit in Greece to mark the day.
Quite early in this project we ran into a remarkable snag--no one seemed to be putting together a reenactment of the Battle of Marathon! So we're trying to help, and we'd like your help as well. Staging a major reenactment of such an important event takes tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of people in a tight organization (we know, we run events every year in the US and Canada) and we're trying to help the Government of Greece put that package together for Marathon. If you'd like to help, with anything from a donation of time or money to a desire to cover the event in media, please contact us, and feel welcome to join the discussion of the event at the Hoplologia discussion board.
Hoplites shown on this page are members of Athenea Prómakhos, a group based in Spain.
